Let Your Body Talk: Reclaiming Your Power Through Gesture and Movement

On a recent episode of The Journey of an Awakening Spirit, I had the honor of welcoming the extraordinary Jen Aks, a leadership coach, dance educator, and creator of the “Power of Gesture” practice. Our conversation was a heart-opening exploration of the mind-body connection and how awakening to your body's innate intelligence can become a catalyst for personal transformation.
Jen’s journey, like so many of ours, began in pain and confusion. As a child, she struggled in the traditional school system, feeling unseen and misunderstood. This experience planted seeds of self-doubt that grew into years of emotional turmoil and physical illness. It wasn’t until a pivotal moment in her late twenties—after turning down a once-in-a-lifetime dinner with John F. Kennedy Jr. because of overwhelming insecurity—that she hit her emotional rock bottom. Curled up on a shower floor, Jen heard a presence ask, “How long are you going to allow society to define you before you define yourself?”
That single question shifted everything.
Soon after, Jen discovered the work of Howard Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences. For the first time, she recognized that she wasn’t broken—she was simply wired differently. She resonated deeply with kinesthetic and emotional intelligence, finding healing and expression through movement and dance. This recognition became the foundation for what would become her signature work: the Power of Gesture.
During the pandemic, Jen began guiding clients through Zoom sessions. Wanting to maintain connection without full-body movement, she encouraged people to use their hands to embody emotions. What emerged was something extraordinary. These gestures—simple, intuitive, and deeply expressive—began to unlock stuck emotions and bring profound release.
This wasn’t just anecdotal. Jen discovered that the hands are connected to specific neural tissue in the brain that helps process and express emotions. This confirmed what she already knew in her heart and body: gesture is a powerful language. One that transcends words, taps into our soul, and allows us to reclaim the parts of ourselves we’ve buried under pain, shame, or fear.
As someone who also found healing through dance, I immediately resonated with Jen’s journey. Dance was my first language when I didn’t have the words to express the rage, confusion, and longing within. And partner dancing—especially learning to follow—revealed every limiting belief I held about trust, control, and vulnerability.
Jen’s work is a reminder that our bodies hold wisdom. That healing doesn’t always come through talking or thinking—it often comes through feeling, moving, and allowing. Her practice invites us to embody both the dark and the light, creating space for every part of ourselves to be seen and heard. As Jen says, “It’s like an internal emotional community where all parts learn to live together.”
One of the most beautiful aspects of her method is its accessibility. You don’t have to be a dancer to experience the power of gesture. You just have to be willing. Whether it’s placing your hand on your heart or drawing shapes in the air, these small movements become sacred rituals that connect you to the truth of who you are.
If you’re feeling stuck, disconnected, or lost in your head, let your body speak. Tune into its messages. Ask it what it needs. And remember—you are not alone. There are tools, guides, and practices that can bring you home to yourself.
