When you're young, brimming with dreams, the world seems like it's yours for the taking. For some, that ambition might burn particularly bright, and they set their eyes on big dreams. That was me. Jeremy Haselwood: a young teenager with music in my heart, convinced I’d someday make it big. I dreamed of being in a band, performing for crowds, and creating music that would connect with people around the world.
In my early twenties, I took a leap of faith. Leaving my hometown in Oklahoma, I packed up and moved to Atlanta with a close friend, determined to break into the music industry. We worked tirelessly, performing in local spots and eventually even managed to save up enough to build a small studio in our apartment. Our entry closet became our vocal booth, and every spare moment was dedicated to writing, recording, and pursuing that dream.
But the journey into the music industry came with challenges I hadn’t anticipated. The closer I got, the more I saw its gritty realities: the struggle, the endless competition, the constant hustle, and the often harsh business side of creativity. What once felt like a beautiful vision began to wear me down. I was almost 30 when I realized that the dream I’d poured years of my life into no longer felt fulfilling; in fact, it felt more like a job, one that was taking more from me than it was giving.
Faced with the harsh reality of needing a new direction, I felt lost. My purpose seemed to have vanished, and I didn’t know who I was outside of the musician striving to make it. It was as if a spark within me had gone out. My creativity and passion, once so vibrant, felt distant. I needed to rediscover myself and find a new path forward.
It wasn’t easy. There were long periods of self-doubt, wondering if I’d wasted years of my life. But then I began to realize something: my journey hadn’t been in vain. Those years of pursuing music had given me incredible experiences, skills, and insights. I had learned to connect with people, express myself, and embrace creativity. Those things hadn’t disappeared; they were simply waiting for a new outlet.
During this time, I went back to school, earned a master’s degree, and met people who helped me see my strengths. Through various assessments and personal coaching, I uncovered other passions that had always been there—my love for helping others and my desire to inspire and encourage. Reflecting on my music journey, I realized that it wasn’t just the music I loved; it was the ability to connect and create something meaningful for others.
Today, I still carry that creative spark, but my purpose has evolved. I wrote a book about my journey, and now I dedicate my time to helping others unlock their potential and discover their own path. Many people, like me, may have pursued dreams that didn’t go exactly as planned, but those dreams aren’t failures. They’re stepping stones. Following my passion in music ultimately led me to my purpose of helping others—something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Looking back, I realize that dreams may evolve, but the journey is just as valuable. You learn, you grow, and you find new ways to shine. And that’s my message to anyone feeling lost or uncertain: the passion you’re pursuing might just be guiding you toward a purpose you haven’t yet realized. Don’t be afraid to embrace it fully and let it lead you where you’re meant to go.
