The Real Reason Burnout Keeps Coming Back (It's Not a Time Management Problem)
You recovered once. You rested, you set boundaries, you felt like yourself again and then somehow, you ended up right back here. This week I'm talking about why burnout relapses, even when you did everything "right" the first time, and why better time management was never going to fix it. If you've recovered from burnout before and you're scared it's happening again, this episode is for you.
You rested. You set boundaries. You finally started feeling like yourself again. So why are you exhausted all over again?
If you're a high-achieving woman who keeps finding herself trapped in the cycle of burnout and recovery, this episode is for you.
In this episode of Burnout Recovery & Nervous System Healing for High-Achieving Women | The Journey of an Awakening Spirit, Kathleen M. Flanagan explores why burnout can keep returning even when you're doing everything you're supposed to do.
The problem may not be your calendar. It may be the belief that your worth is tied to how much you accomplish.
Kathleen shares her personal journey through recurring burnout, grief, and emotional overwhelm, including how she began recognizing the deeper patterns that were keeping her exhausted. Through learning to listen to her body and developing a different relationship with her own needs, she discovered a sense of inner peace she hadn't experienced before.
This conversation is about more than getting your energy back. It's about reconnecting with who you are when you're no longer defined by everything you do for everyone else.
In This Episode, You'll Discover:
-
Why time management and setting boundaries may not be enough to break the burnout cycle.
-
How connecting your self-worth to productivity can contribute to recurring exhaustion.
-
Why recovering your energy doesn't necessarily change the patterns that led to burnout.
-
What Kathleen learned through her personal experiences with grief, emotional overwhelm, and nervous system healing.
-
How to begin recognizing your body's signals without judging yourself.
-
A simple guided practice to help you separate your worth from your accomplishments.
A Gentle Reminder
You don't have to earn your right to rest.
You don't have to prove your value by being the strong one, the reliable one, or the person who never drops the ball.
Your worth was never up for negotiation.

0:02
You did the work. You rested. You said no to things.
0:09
You felt like a person again for a while. And then somehow you're right back here. Exhausted,
0:18
resentful, running on fumes, wondering what you did wrong. I need to tell you something important.
0:26
You didn't do anything wrong.
0:30
Burnout doesn't relapse because you failed at managing your time better. It relapses because the thing underneath it
0:37
was never actually resolved. Today, I'm showing you what that thing is.
0:46
There are three things that you need to address. First, why time management was
0:52
never the real fix. Second, what actually causes burnout to return. And third, what has to change for the recovery to hold?
1:04
First, time management was never the real fix because burnout was never really about your calendar. You can
1:11
master every productivity system there is and still burn out again. Because the calendar wasn't the wound. The wound is
1:21
the belief usually formed a long time before your current job [snorts] that your worth is tied to what you produce.
1:31
Time management can't rearrange the schedule. It cannot touch the belief driving you to fill every open space with more.
1:42
Second, why it comes back when you recover from burnout without addressing that underlying belief, your
1:51
recovery, your energy, not your identity. So the moment your energy returns, the old pattern has fuel again
2:00
and it runs the exact same program because the program itself was never rewritten.
2:07
This is why so many high achieving women describe burnout recovery as a cycle instead of a one-time event. It's not
2:16
that you're bad at boundaries. It's that the boundary was built on top of an unhealed belief instead of replacing it.
2:25
Third, what makes it hold?
2:28
Real lasting recovery requires separating your worth from your output, not as a slogan, but as a felt practice
2:38
truth. That means noticing in real time the moment you're about to say yes out of fear of being seen as less than and
2:47
choosing differently even when it's uncomfortable.
2:50
It means grieving honestly about the identity you built around being the strong one. the
2:58
reliable one, the one who never drops the ball because your identity has to loosen before something more sustainable can take place.
3:09
This is slower work than a new calendar app.
3:13
But it's the only version of recovery that actually holds.
3:20
So I want to talk to you when this started happening for me and I
3:28
remember and I would say it's probably been in the last couple of years that I have actually gone through this.
3:38
I remember as an entrepreneur and I love the saying it's lonely at the top but it's lonier
3:46
at the laptop. And when I was working on how to like really grow my business, where I'm going, changing the direction,
3:54
creating products,
3:57
and I remember sitting here in my mind as I'm typing on the computer and my mind's going 100 miles an hour about
4:07
this is mundane work. All you do is slack off and just you just do mundane work. You're not really doing anything that's making a difference.
4:15
And I remember because I was in David Bear's program at the time and one of the things that he talked about on one
4:23
of his coaching calls is that our egos will do that that we sit there and think all we're doing is this mundane as we're building because it takes so much energy
4:31
to build and launch. Okay? And I understood that concept until I was actually in the concept. And when I got
4:38
inside the concept and thinking, God, all I'm doing is this. I feel like I'm just wasting my time. I'm not out there. I'm not doing
4:46
this. But it's like, but people have to have someplace to go. People have to have something that you're talking about, something a deliverable.
4:53
And when he said that, it was like, oh my god, this is like natural. This is normal. So that was the first time I
5:01
stopped with all that head trash about how I was just wasting time.
5:08
So, as I'm going through that, then I start noticing that I start getting a little bit more overloaded at time.
5:15
Like, I just get downloaded with all this information. I'm working as fast as I can while the energy is and then I burn out. I just stop and burn out. And
5:23
I'm like, "Oh my god, I have to stop." And I do. And nobody really said that that was burnout. Nobody really said that was
5:32
overwhelm. Nobody said anything. It was just what I was observing. And I was like, "Okay, why is this happening? And why do I feel like I've lost it
5:39
somewhere along the way." Now, I didn't know anything yet. I'm asking questions for myself because what I'm talking about is what I did, what I learned, and
5:48
how I got through it. And come to find out that a lot of the things that I'm doing that I've learned on my own and
5:54
not through somebody else are actually real life things that you have to do.
6:01
So, as I start realizing that and feeling this tiredness and exhaustion, I'm like, "Okay, I'm getting it. Just
6:08
take the time and rest, get some sleep, whatever." Thinking that's going to fix the problem. Well, it does for a moment.
6:15
And I mean, just a moment. So, I do this and I get back into it and everything's going and I stop again. So, it's like, "Stop, go, stop, go, stop, go is how I
6:23
felt." And it was getting old for me because I feel like I wasn't getting it because then I go back to all this stuff I created and started but never
6:31
finished. And it's like, okay, where where do I go from here? So then it's like, okay, go back to where you were.
6:38
Where were you thinking? Where were you going? What were you heading into?
6:41
Because I was really trying to make this work.
6:44
And some things I managed to finish because it made sense to me. Other things it's like, okay, I think this is for another day, but it's not for today.
6:52
And I just had to start like dealing with what I really wanted. And
7:00
part of this was trying to find where I was landing in my messaging.
7:04
And I think that was the biggest part of this. But also during this period of time when my father died last year, I came to a scratching halt.
7:18
I didn't understand anything. I mean, I had been estranged from this man since I was what, 30 years old.
7:28
I didn't want to talk to him. I didn't want to see him. I wanted nothing to do with him. And yet there's this element of grief that's coming up. And I'm like, I don't understand how I could even be feeling this.
7:39
And I also understood at that time too was that all of a sudden I'm free to walk about the cabin. I'm not looking over my shoulder. I'm noticing. And
7:48
that's all I'm saying is I'm just noticing what's going on within me, within my body, within my thought systems.
7:58
And then when people asked, "How are you doing?" I kept saying, "It's complicated." Because it was complicated. All I know is I had all
8:06
these emotions stirring inside my body that I couldn't even filter through because it was like so much was coming up and I just was numb is how I felt. I
8:15
was just numb. So, [snorts] I'm like, "Okay, no big deal. Not going to deal with it. I'll just let it do its thing.
8:22
I will acknowledge it. I'll check in on it and I'll come back to it." And I did. And then I went into
8:30
depression. And part of that depression was because Bold Prairie TV went into bankruptcy. And this was where I was my show was being done. And I didn't know
8:39
what to do. I didn't know what to say. I didn't know how to move forward. It was like everything faking collapsed on me at that moment in time. And I spent
8:48
three weeks just trying to find my way back to the surface to get air. That's how it felt. Most people did not know that I was at a suicidal tendency again.
8:58
And it wasn't that I was suicidal. It was the thoughts that were coming up were suicidal. And I didn't understand because I'm like, why? I don't feel this
9:06
way. Why is this happening? Again, I still didn't know.
9:12
I'm just observing, somewhat concerned, not entirely, but enough because I
9:20
didn't understand what was all happening inside of what was happening. And this and I knew all this was centered around the death of my father. I knew that.
9:31
So, I figure, okay, just keep going. And about three weeks later, I decide I'm going to do this. So I reached out to a
9:38
mentor in podcasting and said, "What do I do? Where do I go? Not sure what to do. Can you help me?" And so he just
9:45
guided me. And so this is where I am. I mean, I've changed platforms. You know, I'm on a different one, a little bit different than what I was before because
9:52
this is the one I wanted, but it couldn't do what I wanted. You know, it was all these little weird things going on. So I made the best of what I could
9:59
with what I knew at the time, and I kept moving forward.
10:06
Then I decided to go on a 90-day detox.
10:10
And that's when everything really started screaming in my head.
10:14
And that's when I started to put together that something's going on inside my nervous system
10:21
because it was an all overbody thing. It was like the message finally materialized so I could understand what
10:28
was happening. And I was so out of control in my own mind and body. I wanted to just shoot somebody. I mean,
10:37
it was like I was just frantic all the time. And I was fine with doing the detox. It didn't bother me, but it was
10:44
what was happening inside my body because of it. Because like all the things that I was using to stuff and nurture and protect myself with. And I'm
10:53
not a food eater, but I would drink wine. I like my wine. I don't drink it near as much as I used to anymore. And I'm okay with that because I don't need
11:00
it for what it was. But see, the whole thing was is that I stopped everything for that detox so I could get the benefit that I needed to heal my body.
11:11
Then my water heater breaks in April and S's leaving in two weeks for Texas for a month and I collapsed again.
11:23
And I didn't and that's when I realized that I had to really address whatever this was. So during the month of May, I
11:31
didn't do a whole lot of anything. I still move forward in doing things. I still put on my show. I still did about what I could handle.
11:41
But as I've said before, during that period of time, I just watched thoughts come out of my body that I had never
11:49
known were there. I mean, I would have thought I should have been put in a mental institution that there was a name with a straight jacket, a straight
11:57
jacket with my name on it because that's how crazy it felt. I didn't judge it. I didn't belittle. I didn't shame myself.
12:05
I didn't do anything. I just observed the thoughts. And a lot of them were from the little girl
12:12
all those years ago when she was being abused and I had to let her go.
12:19
So when S left, I went to the grocery store to get the food so I could, you know, at least take care of myself and God
12:29
decided I was going to make this a really good thing that this is about me and I get to do whatever I want to do and eat whatever I want to eat. Well, I
12:36
didn't eat anything bad. But when I was in the grocery store and the little girl comes up and she starts her wang at me again, I said, "Okay, what is it that you want that's going to make you happy?
12:47
Chocolate and wine." So I said, "Okay, I'll buy you chocolate and I will buy you wine." And I did. And that day, that
12:53
a that evening, I ate chocolate and I had a glass of wine. And I said, "Do you feel better now?" And she's like, "No."
13:01
And it was just like this little petulent child with her hands crossed and her feet planted in the ground and a
13:08
skull on her face of like it didn't work because it wasn't about that anymore.
13:15
That was what I realized at that moment is I did the things that stuffed or soothed my nervous system.
13:23
My nervous system was trying to talk to me. It was trying to release, but I wasn't because I couldn't cope with it yet. And so when I did the detox, I was
13:33
forced to deal with it. And I guarantee you, I whole time it was like, I want a glass of wine. That's all I want. I want a glass of wine. I don't care about
13:41
anything else. But I never bought the wine. I lived through it and it wasn't easy.
13:50
But the thing was is S was with me on this journey because we both had conversations I don't think any of us, the two of us ever thought we would ever
13:58
have about bodily functions, about what we were experiencing. The conversations were just unbelievable. But see, they
14:05
were so foreign and nobody talked like this. But we were both in it and experiencing it and we held each other up. So when I wanted my wine, he
14:13
wouldn't let me do it. And that was really surprising to me.
14:19
But when he wanted to get off the off the diet, I wouldn't let him. So I mean, we were such a great support system for each other during this process because I was very much a drill sergeant.
14:31
Anyways, as I started realizing this and seeing this, I started to heal. And by the time right
14:40
before cell came home, there was this incredible sense of peace inside my body that I had never felt before in my life ever, ever.
14:49
And I was really excited about that and my capacity was coming back. What I have discovered since then is yes, there are
14:58
still moments that I can get wound up and I can get upset and all this, but what I've noticed that my capacity doesn't drain anymore because I've learned to listen to what my body needs.
15:10
I had to learn the language of the body.
15:12
Now, that's not an easy thing to do, but see, you only you are the one who can interpret it because our bodies are
15:20
unique to us. And so if you don't know the language of the body, the only way to learn the language of the body is to sit and be in it. And it does suck.
15:31
There are times it really does suck. But see, what you have to do is get rid of the judgment in your head. You're not crazy.
15:40
You were taught to do this. Your body learned to survive because of whatever happened to you in your childhood.
15:47
Whatever you observe, whatever you witness, whatever happened, you created this. You created the thought forms for
15:55
whatever you had to do. Because the body when it doesn't understand anything as a child, as the paradigm talks about, we just absorb it and we put it in our
16:04
catalog in the file cabinet in our brain and one day it's going to show up because something's going to catastrophic's going to happen and it's going to show up and it's going to and
16:12
all that's trying to do is saying, "Okay, here we are. We're in this situation again. How do we do it?
16:18
Because our mind makes stories up. It's designed to create stories.
16:23
It feels something. And this is all electromagnetic stuff. This is all the electrons going on. This is not anything other than it experiences something. It
16:31
feels it and then it moves into it. And then we put the words into it. We put the meaning into it. We put everything
16:38
into it to make stuff up. I always said I had a great MSU degree. Make up.
16:47
And I didn't realize that's something that we normally do with inside our bodies anyways. I didn't know that's what our mind did. I know it now, but I
16:54
didn't know it then. Because as we more light hits this planet, the more we are being forced to look at it. So, we're
17:02
all crazy right now with our nervous systems because there is so much going on outside on that world that we have to
17:09
really take that time to take care of ourselves. And sometimes it means just stopping and being. I don't care if you
17:17
want to spend a day just zoning out on TV, you know, all day long. I've done that. That was my form of rest. Just
17:26
watch one movie after another after another just because it was a way to rest. It was a way to stop.
17:34
Now I can just sit there and be in it and just go, "Okay, what's going on?" Because like yesterday, the energies are all over the place because of what's
17:43
going on with planetary alignments and everything else and the equinox and the harvest moon and everything else that's coming up. I was in it going, "Wow, I
17:51
feel like I'm going to get sick. I feel like my body's going down for a count. I feel kind of uh lightheaded,
17:59
but I felt fine. I mean, ultimately, I felt okay. It was like I was observing what's going on in the body. So I was like, "Okay, well, let's just [snorts]
18:09
be with it." So I'm not getting any answers. So I was like, "Okay, it must be nothing." And [clears throat] I reached out to a friend of mine and she's saying that she's having these all
18:17
these things and she had the same exact symptoms as I was having. So we realized it was nothing more than a planetary astrological thing going on, energy
18:25
shifting, all of that. So I just sat with it and and was with it. I didn't do anything. I ate a good meal. I took care
18:32
of myself. I rested. You know, I didn't if I wasn't able to move forward and do much with the business, I didn't. And it
18:40
was okay. I didn't beat myself up. I didn't punish myself. I was like, okay.
18:45
But see, that's what we are supposed to be doing right now. We are in an ascension process.
18:54
And because that means the light is entering this planet in ways that we can't even do it. So when we start feeling things and we're getting anxious
19:03
and and overwhelmed, a lot of times it's just the nervous system is like things are coming up and we need to stop and
19:10
look at it instead of drinking or doing drugs or watching TV or whatever it is that we do to soo ourselves.
19:19
So write about it, you know, journal about it, be with it, sit with it, allow the thoughts to come up, and don't judge
19:26
them because underneath all of that, there's always something more there. And
19:33
what I found when I did this and when I keep doing it, because it's not like a oneandone. I mean, yeah, would I like it
19:41
to be a oneandone? Yeah, I sure would like it to be a oneanddone, but it's not a oneanddone because there is so much stuff that is
19:49
buried that I don't even know how much is buried. So, when I allow myself the time to let it come up, observe it, love
19:58
the little girl, take care of myself, if I want to have a glass of wine, have a glass of wine. It's not like I need the
20:06
glass of wine. It's because I still enjoy it. And that's okay. But I'm not running. I'm not hiding. I'm not
20:13
denying. I'm not putting my head in the sand. Believe me, when I want to put my head in the sand, I know when I'm putting my head in the sand and I own it. You know, like when this water
20:22
heater broke, that was the first thing I want to do is put my head in the sand, but I didn't because I knew how to get through it. I knew how to navigate.
20:30
Didn't mean my nervous system was ready for it, but I knew how to do it.
20:36
And then I had to look at what is this what is really going on because this keep seems to keep happening around
20:42
water in my homes and you know it's emotion and I'm glad it happened because you
20:50
know sometimes there's other things that show up because of it and you know had my crawl space not flooded 3 or 4 years
20:59
ago I wouldn't have known that my staircase going into the basement would have fallen. I wouldn't have seen the holes, the cracks in the foundation that
21:06
were down there in the f in the crawl space. There were lots of things that we discovered that I didn't know were there. I we didn't even know there there was water penetration until the flood.
21:17
We had no idea, but I think the previous owners did and didn't tell us. So, those are the things that there was a gift
21:25
inside of that. And if you can look at when things are happening like this that aren't feeling good and you can be
21:33
gentle and kind with yourself because you should be.
21:38
You're in a perfect place. This is where you're supposed to be. This is what you created. This is what you designed. So be nice to yourself. Be gentle to
21:46
yourself because there's always a gift on the other side. And when I started dealing with the nervous system and finding that there was a peace that I've
21:55
never felt, I mean, that was so rewarding. It was like I it was like almost like, wow, what's going on inside of me? And that was the beautiful part
22:03
about that. So when I still get a little overwhelmed and things are happening, my capacity is not shot anymore because
22:12
it's like, okay, just stop and breathe and just be with it and that's all I have to do.
22:19
And then everything that I keep giving you each week on things you can do for your nervous system, I use them and they work phenomenally.
22:28
And I had a conversation with my business partner last week about that I gave this little thing I did on the show
22:36
and he said and I told him what it was and he said, "Oh, I got that. I got that from somebody so many years ago or whatever. I don't even know who the person was. I didn't know he was doing
22:44
anything like that and yet this is what I'm doing." And so it's about just
22:51
really taking the time for you. I mean, take that bubble bath, take five extra in the shower and just ask your body, what is it that it needs from you?
23:02
Because sometimes that's all it needs is to be acknowledged. I mean, when I had a m when I was a migraine sufferer, I remember the day that I asked my body. I
23:11
was down for the count and I just couldn't stand these migraines anymore.
23:15
And I finally asked my body. I said, "Why are you doing this?
23:20
Why am I constantly getting a migraine?" And do you know what? My body actually answered me and it said, "Because you
23:28
asked me to." I said, "Okay, what did when did I ask and why?" And they said, "Every time that you got to too close to the light,
23:37
you asked me to stop you because I always died in the past from it." And I was so stunned at what I heard. And it
23:45
made so much sense. It It was like I knew it to be true. I just knew it without a shadow of a doubt to be true.
23:53
And what did I do? I said, "Thank you so much for doing what you did. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to me and honoring it, but I don't need
24:02
that anymore. I'm okay. I'm okay to go to the light and I'm fine with it. And thank you for your service.
24:11
and I've never had another migraine since.
24:16
So, when we take the time to ask and we take the time to listen, it will surprise you.
24:25
But you always want to say thank you because this is you, your higher self, doing the things that you've asked it to do. And you just have to trust that.
24:34
That's all you have to do is just trust it.

So, what I want to do right now is I want you to close your eyes. And if you can't, it's okay to keep them open.
24:49
And I want you to bring to mind one thing that is on your plate right
24:54
now that you said yes to out of fear and not desire.
25:07

25:25
Now say out loud or silently, "My worth was never up for negotiation."
25:41
Say it again, but slower.
25:48
My worth was never up for negotiation.
26:00
Let it land somewhere in your chest, not just your head.
26:13
Taking a deep breath.
26:17
And as you let it out, let your hands unclench if they're clenched.
26:26
Let your jaws soften if it's tight.
26:32
You are not your output today.
26:38
You're just a person breathing and that's enough.
26:52
If you recovered from burnout before and you're terrified of ending up back here, you are exactly who the sanctuary was
27:01
built for. This is the deeper identity work we do together and not just another rest strategy. I'm offering a 7-day free
27:11
trial, so come check us out and feel the difference. I will have the link in the show notes. On Friday, I'm delivering
27:18
another permission slip that's going to pick up where we left off today, and I will see you there. This is Kathleen
27:25
Flanagan, and you don't have to do this alone.
